On July 2, 1938, calculations for installing a Maybach HL 61 engine in a Panzer I Ausf.C, known as VK6.02, were drawn up. On July 28 plans for a differential steering unit were made aswell. Recorded in the July 1941 developement report, two of the six prototype Panzer I Ausf.Cs were completed as VK6.02s. On October 20, 1941, plans for a simplified two-stage steering unit for the VK6.02 were proposed by Krauss-Maffei.
