In the second half of WW2 the Germans were in need of new anti-aircraft weapons; between May and November, 1943, Hitler held negotiations for the production of new anti-aircraft tanks. These meetings established the "'Inspection 6", a new department responsible for the development of new flakpanzers. By mid 1944, Panzer III chassis were being used for sturmgeschutz, and Panzer IV chassis were already being utilized for flakpanzers. At the same time, alternative chassis for flakpanzers were being looked into. One project was to mount a 3,7cm Flak 43 on a modernized Panzer II Ausf.L chassis. The chassis was lengthened by two roadwheels, and the turret was sunk down into the hull to reduce height. The vehicle weighed more than the original Ausf.L but it used the same engine. However, the vehicle proved too complicated, and the project was dropped with only a wooden mockup built.
